Unique Wedding Ideas for the Unity Candle
The title of this article may sound like an oxymoron. You know, like jumbo shrimp! Two
terms together than seem to contradict each other. Most would not think of the unity candle as something
unique – and it really isn’t.
In fact, some think it has been done to death. But I do still often see the candle
ceremony and I think that is because its meaning does an enduring quality so that people still want to do
even if everybody else is too. But you can still do the unity candle ceremony and add some uniqueness to it.
In this post, I will offer some unique wedding ideas for the unity candle. Try some of
these or let them spur you to some of your own creativety to come up with a way to make this wedding
tradition more memorable.
One thing you can do is to involve other members of the family in the ceremony. Often
the mothers of the bride and groom do light the taper candles for their respective families.
But if you have children you could include them as well. This wouldn’t work for too
young children (that you don’t want playing with fire) but older children could have candles that they light
as well and light the center candle with mom and dad.
Or you could include your guests in the ceremony. I’ve seen this done different ways
and it’s usually works best for smaller weddings. But each guest can have a small candle. After the couple
lights their unity candle, they can step over, one to each end of the aisles and light the candle of the
persons on the ends. They in turn light the candle to the next person and on like this until all candles are
lit. This is a nice way to involve everyone in the lighting ceremony and represents the closeness of all the
family and friends.
Finally, you might consider doing the unity ceremony as part of the reception. This
certainly would be different from what most do. But there are some reasons why it might also be a good idea.
One, if you are having an outdoor wedding ceremony, it can be difficult to get the candles lit and keep them
lit. The least amount of wind can blow them out. So do it indoors during the reception to avoid that
embarrassment.
Two, it may be easier to get your wedding guests involved in the lighting of the
candle ceremony at the reception. Give each guest a small candle that they take to their table. They can
light it themselves, or the when the couple comes by to greet the guests, they can light the candle
themselves.
